More info

The coin celebrates the 10th anniversarry of the Black Stork Protection Plan in Latvia. The black stork is a large wading bird in the stork family Ciconiidae. It is a widespread, but uncommon, species that breeds in the warmer parts of Europe (predominantly in central and eastern regions), across temperate Asia and Southern Africa.

Latest research data suggest that the population of Black Storks in Latvia is currently dangerously low. Most of the birds that were left in nests in previous years were in bad shape (half-starved). On top of that, females are affected the most. It is possible that this is the reason for such a steep ratio between genders (80% of males and 20% of females).

The centerpiece of the coin's design is a black stork. Below the inscription "LATVIJA 2015". On the outer edge 12 five-pointed stars representing the European Union.
