This is an original Luftwaffe Aluminum Dinner Fork – 1939, produced for use in German Air Force barracks and field kitchens during the early years of World War II.
It is manufactured from lightweight wartime-grade aluminum, measuring approximately 21.3 cm in length, and remains in good overall condition, showing minor wear consistent with military service use.
The obverse of the handle features a finely detailed Luftwaffe eagle, crisply struck and fully legible. The reverse is clearly marked “F.L.U.V.”, an abbreviation for Flieger Unterkunft Verwaltung (Air Force Barracks Administration), indicating official Luftwaffe property. Additional markings include the manufacturer’s code and the date “H.M.Z 39”, confirming production in 1939.
These forks were standard issue within Luftwaffe bases, flight schools, airfields, and forward operating areas. Lightweight, durable, and practical, they represent the utilitarian approach of early-war German military equipment.
A well-preserved and fully authentic example of WWII Luftwaffe messware, this fork embodies both historical function and symbolic design characteristic of pre-war and early-war German Air Force material culture.
Multiple examples available; each fork is in similar condition, and the best-preserved specimen will be sent.
The Luftwaffe, established in 1935, rapidly expanded into one of the most advanced air forces of the era.
During the early years of the war (1939–1941), Luftwaffe personnel were stationed across Europe, and standard-issue mess hall equipment — such as aluminum forks, spoons, and knives — reflected the emphasis on lightweight, mass-produced field gear suitable for rapid deployment.
Items marked F.L.U.V. were issued specifically to Luftwaffe barracks, ground crews, and support units, making them historically significant remnants of daily life within the German Air Force during WWII.
Today, authentic pieces of Luftwaffe messware are sought after by WWII collectors, military historians, and museums due to their symbolic connection to the logistical and operational structure behind Luftwaffe activity.
